IWC BOZ Solid Operable Wall

Above six metres, a wall’s height, its own weight and its joints all show up directly in what the room hears. BOZ brings the three into one system, with 100mm solid panels carried on heavy-duty top-hung track, and it is the highest rated wall in the IWC operable range for sound insulation. A 100mm BOZ specimen achieved Rw 51 dB in third-party laboratory testing.

Acoustic performance

Sound insulation depends on the panel build-up, the facing materials, the acoustic infill, the seals and the surrounding construction. Panels carry acoustic infill, and the facing build up is specified to the acoustic requirement of the space. Where a higher grade is needed, a sound barrier can be added within the ceiling void.

Acoustic seals

Leaks begin at the joints. A vertical tongue and groove profile aligns one panel to the next, and the Fast Set retractable seals at head and floor apply pressure as each panel locks, closing both lines at the same time.

Panel construction

Facings in particle board, gypsum board or MDF with acoustic infill behind, and all four edges wrapped in a 6063-T5 architectural grade anodised aluminium protective frame.

Track and carrier system

Four heavy duty aluminium track sizes, set out as a straight run or with turns in more than one direction. Panels run on single or twin track carriers, selected to suit the stacking position and the floor plan.

Panel dimensions

Panel heights reach 10 metres, the scale of a ballroom or an exhibition hall. Anything beyond the standard range is assessed by the manufacturer case by case.

Options and finishes

Single or double leaf pass doors let people through while the wall stays extended. Panels can be finished at the factory, or supplied unfinished so the site finishes them with the surrounding works.

Quiet, above six metres

Below six metres the panel thickness and the acoustic grade of CLAZ are usually enough, and it takes less depth to stack. Above six metres, panel weight and the control of deflection become the governing variables, and the heavy duty track and 100mm panel of BOZ exist for exactly that condition.

Where two neighbouring spaces have to run at the same time without hearing each other, the acoustic grade becomes the second threshold. BOZ is the highest rated wall IWC makes, which is what a room of that kind asks for.

Yes, though the conditions are stricter than on a standard floor. Above six metres the weight of each panel rises sharply, the track has to be fixed to structure capable of carrying it, and the loading is confirmed by the structural engineer. The zone above the track also has to be closed off, otherwise sound simply passes over the top. The heavy duty track and 100mm panel of BOZ are designed for exactly this condition, with standard panel heights to 10 metres and anything above that assessed by the manufacturer case by case.

When two events run at the same time, the wall has to hold back music and speech at once, which is a higher requirement than an office floor. BOZ delivers STC 45 to 51 depending on the facing build up, the highest available in the IWC range. The grade for a given venue is best decided from the type of event and the audio system it uses.

A stated STC figure is a laboratory result. What a finished room achieves depends on three things that are easy to overlook: whether the return air void above the ceiling is closed, whether the floor is level, and whether adjacent risers are dealt with at the same time. Site performance depends on the complete construction, including the ceiling void, floor junctions, adjacent services and installation quality, so project-specific acoustic advice is recommended.

To building structure, a slab or a structural beam, never to a suspended ceiling grid alone. The track connects to the structure through adjustable drop rods, and the loading is calculated and confirmed by the structural engineer from the total weight of the wall. This is the item that decides whether an operable wall is possible at all, so it belongs at the start of the fit out design.

Stacking depth follows the number of panels, their thickness and the direction they stack. BOZ panels are 100mm thick and can stack to one side or split to both ends according to the circulation. The stacking area is usually planned as a concealed store, out of sight in normal use. Confirm its position and depth as part of the plan layout.
